ELEFANTE BLANCO (White Elephant)
by Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo
Elefante Blanco (White Elephant) questions drought and corruption.

The road markers on the way to Cabo de la Vela, Middle Guajira, have neither water passing beneath them nor a road above. They stand there in the middle of the desert: pachydermic. Now, they only serve as shade for WayΓΊu indigenous people, goats, and wasps. Also, as a base for political campaign signs of the ruling governor.

White elephants are also called those State constructions that are abandoned halfway because the resources were lost. The lack of water in Colombia, especially in La Guajira, depends not only on climate change but also on poor planning and misallocation of funds.

Therefore, covering the structure with a white canvas and illuminating it at night is a way through art and photography to draw attention to this issue.
