In de Baan van de Ring
by Tom Verbruggen & Tim F. Van der Mensbrugghe
An invisible wall twists around Ghent. A wall of asphalt and fine dust that separates and connects neighborhoods. What were once real city walls is now a city ring. Every day, thousands of vehicles roll along that ring, and with the Ghent circulation plan, the congestion is only set to increase.

The only thing people pay attention to in their cars is the traffic. They overlook the fact that there is life along the ring. That's why photographer Tom Verbruggen hits the pause button. His analog images freeze the chaos and reveal that there is life along the R40. While everyone complains about the ugliness of the ring, Verbruggen surprises with its beauty.

Observations from reporter Tim F. Van der Mensbrugghe complement the images. He looks away from the cars and seeks out the people strolling along the ring. The whole experience is a new walk along an age-old route.
