Christine Erhard Building Images
by Prof. Dr. Georg Imdahl, Christin Müller
The photographer Christine Erhard’s work is an investigation of the history of architectural representation, specifically that of Modernism, New Objectivity, Constructivism and Brutalism. The starting place for her images are archival, often canonical photographs depicting architecture, architectural spaces or cityscapes. These two-dimensional images become the templates for three-dimensional constructions, which are in turn photographed, so that various levels of reflexion and reality become overlaid. In exhibitions, Erhard’s works are reintroduced into real space as part of constructed installations, enabling them to be experienced within a tangible dialectic of image and space. In these installations the photographic image becomes an object oscillating between two-dimensional ornament, spatial illusionism and sculpture. The extensive monograph includes both the most important works of the artist as well as new works. With essays by Christin Müller and Prof. Dr. Georg Imdahl.
